The city of Edmonton is asking residents to “Go Bagless” and leave their grass clippings on the lawn after a mow so as to reduce waste that can otherwise be used as fertilizer for the lawn.
Program Coordinator for the City’s home compost programs Rodney Al says grass clippings naturally add nutrients to your lawn as it is about 80 per cent water.
The city has instituted a contest in order to make the campaign successful. Edmontonians can enter to win a $200 gift card or a $50 gift card for use at City of Edmonton facilities and attractions.
“A lot of what is often called ‘waste’ is actually a useful resource. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn is good for our soil, biodiversity, environment and waste system,” said Jodi Goebel, director of business integration and waste strategy in a news release.
“Going bagless means less grass is collected at the curb, which supports our Council-approved 25-year waste strategy and helps us divert waste. Thousands of Edmontonians already ‘Go Bagless,’ and we want to show everyone just how easy the process is.”
