As with many other Alberta towns, the history of Vulcan dates back to the early 20th century and CPR development. The railway and agriculture helped to build Vulcan, a place that once had nine grain elevators towering over it. It would only be by coincidence that a wildly famous science fiction series’ species would share the town’s name.

When visiting Vulcan today, all this history is on full display, including the Star Trek connection.
Vulcan for Trekkies
Star Trek fans from Alberta and around the world make Vulcan a destination goal or bucket list item. And for good reason. For quite some time now, the town as a whole has leaned fully into this pop culture connection. Vulcan became the official Star Trek capital of Canada in 2010 upon a visit from THE Vulcan, Leanord Nimoy.
- Vulcan’s Spock Days are held every June and feature three days of family-friendly activities, a car show, and a fair.
- The ultimate Trek fans can plan their visits for late July and the annual VulCon. This weekend-long Star Trek Convention has been celebrated in Vulcan for over 30 years.
- Start a visit to Vulcan at any time of the year at the Visitor’s Centre! This centre is also considered the Trek Station and aims to show off the best of the town, as well as an array of show memorabilia and space and science exhibits.
- A walk or bike ride around town will reveal many other nods to the show: there is a bronze bust of Spock with Nimoy’s handprint, a large mural of Star Trek doctors, or the Starship Enterprise replica.
