Banff is the latest Alberta town following Calgary and Edmonton to make masks mandatory at all indoor places.
Banff Town Council has passed Bylaw 436 – The Temporary Mandatory Mask Bylaw making wearing masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces like grocery stores, shops, cafés, places of worship, sports facilities, common areas of hotels, motels, and other indoor facilities, and outside in the 100 and 200 blocks of Banff Avenue and Caribou Street, starting 12:00 p.m. noon of Friday, July 31.
Masks are not required while eating or drinking, engaging in athletic or fitness activity. Masks are also not required for children under two years old, a person who is hearing impaired, or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication, and for those who have underlying health conditions that prevent them from safely wearing a mask.
Schools, daycare facilities, portions of buildings that are being used for the purpose of providing day camps, offices of professional service providers such as lawyers and accountants where clients receive services in areas not open to the general public, hospitals, independent health facilities, and offices of regulated health professionals and school buses are also exempt.
Business owners are expected to display proper signage to ensure that patrons wear masks. As per the bylaw, business owners who fail to display the prescribed signage and those who are not wearing masks could be fined $150.
