Professional hockey could soon return to Hamilton, as the New York Islanders plan to move their American Hockey League affiliate to the city for the 2026–27 season.

The move still needs approval from the AHL Board of Governors before it becomes official.
The team would play at TD Coliseum, an 18,000-seat arena that recently went through a $300 million renovation. The venue is operated by Oak View Group and is expected to host the Islanders’ top prospects under a long-term agreement.
For Bridgeport, Connecticut, this marks the end of a long run. The franchise has been based there for 25 years.
Looking ahead, general manager Mathieu Darche said the organization is eager to settle into Hamilton. “The support the city has shown our organization throughout this transition has been incredible. We look forward to having our top young talent play in front of such a strong fanbase inside the newly renovated, world-class TD Coliseum, and we are committed to establishing ourselves in the community to engage a new generation of hockey fans.”
The Islanders say they will continue working with Bridgeport during the transition at Total Mortgage Arena.
If approved, details such as the team name, logo, and ticket plans will be announced later.
