Nominate a Calgary and area Senior for The Top 7 Over 70 Award!
Established with the aim of celebrating the accomplishments of Calgary and area seniors and to create new multi-generational mentorship programs that stimulate the economy, the Top 7 Over 70 Awards will recognize seven people who are achieving excellence in one or more of a myriad of fields, focusing on enterprises and endeavours started after age 70.
Jim Gray — a noted businessman, energy guru and philanthropist — initiated the idea of the awards after years of meeting exceptional seniors starting exceptional ventures later in life.
“The contributions of seniors to our community and economy are incredibly significant,” says Gray. “They’re moving the dial every day, in terms of making a difference and making Calgary a more dynamic city.”
Gray and a team of volunteer organizers behind Top 7 Over 70 commissioned a report from the Canada West Foundation to investigate seniors’ impact on the economy. The full report will be released in the early summer, but the executive summary says, “Engaging more seniors in entrepreneurship — with their resources, experience and connections — provides an exciting opportunity to create jobs and revitalize Calgary.”
Nominees for the Top 7 Over 70 Awards will have started a new venture, reprised an existing one, or taken their previous work in a new direction in one or more of the following areas: health and recreation, arts and culture, science, business, volunteerism, environment, overcoming adversity and making a difference.
The Top 7 Over 70 program will also raise funds for multi-generational mentorship opportunities, co-ordinated via Calgary Economic Development.
