Ottawa Upgrades 9-1-1 Service to Connect Cities Across North America

Ottawa has made a significant advancement in its 9-1-1 emergency services, enabling residents to swiftly connect with 9-1-1 services in other North American cities.

According to the news release, the City’s Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee implemented this innovative update inspired by a suggestion from local resident Michael Wood.

Now, Ottawa residents can dial 9-1-1 for emergencies involving someone in a different city without the need to search for that city’s local non-emergency phone number.

This feature is particularly useful for situations like wellness checks or when immediate assistance is required outside of Ottawa. The direct call transfer between different 9-1-1 services aims to save crucial time in life-threatening or public safety emergencies.

Michael Wood expressed his satisfaction at seeing a direct and quick way to access help for loved ones,  stating in a news release that, “It will reduce stress and anxiety in those most urgent and terrifying situations, which I have experienced firsthand. I am thrilled to see the City of Ottawa take this important first step towards modernizing the 9-1-1 system.”
