50+ Places to Toboggan in Greater Toronto Area

Photographer: William James ca. 1914 City of Toronto Archives

Where to Toboggan: If you can find a suitable hill covered with snow with fairly decent slope (steeper for more excitement), clear of  trees, rocks, fences and bare spots and no obstructions at the bottom (including trees), room at the bottom to stop (no roads)

then you are all set to embrace Old Man Winter… except…

City of Toronto (bylaw 608-22) prohibits tobogganing in 14 Toronto parks and anywhere it is posted to prohibit toboggan: Chorley Park, Winston Churchill Park, Lithuania Park, High Park (Hillside Gardens), Cashman Park (stone steps), Centennial Park (posted locations/north parking lot), Vyner Greenbelt, Earl Bales, Eglinton Park (southwest corner of the park), Roding Park (hill adjacent to parking lot), Cearbrook Park, (southwest corner of the parking lot), Botany Hill Park, Fanfare Park, Rouge Park (Twyn River area).

Tobogganing is permitted at all of the City of Toronto’s other parks (if you can find a suitable hill for your child or yourself).

Similar restrictions are in place at Aurora (designated tobogganing locations) and Pickering.  Before going out, ensure you are aware of your city/town’s bylaws.

  • I have counted the number of tobogganing hills that mech each city / town. For example Oakville has three listed tobogganing hills same as Milton. Burlington has six tobogganing hills. Every City / Town is distinguished with different color, nothing to do with difficulty or length of the hills.

  • Can you please tell me what is the Legend for the toboggan hill map? (meaning of each colour). I assume it's level of difficultly or slope of the hill, but what does each colour mean?
    I couldn't find it anywhere.
