The Salvation Army Thrift Store is preparing to welcome shoppers to a new space in Peterborough, adding to its growing presence in Ontario.

The organization is opening its 40th store in the province at 81 George St. N, spanning nearly 10,000 square feet, on November 27.

Managing Director Ted Troughton says the move comes as more Canadians look for ways to save money while choosing secondhand options. He notes that the store aims to offer an accessible shopping environment for residents while also supporting the broader work of The Salvation Army.

Money raised from items sold in the thrift store helps fund a range of local services, including food banks, shelters, addiction rehabilitation, and emergency relief efforts. Troughton says each opening represents more than just additional retail space—it is a chance to strengthen community support networks. He adds that the team looks forward to celebrating with visitors during the grand opening event.

The shop will feature used clothing, household goods, electronics, books, art, and other donated items. Regular shopping hours run Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the site will accept donations every day.

Across Canada, The Salvation Army Thrift Store operates 95 locations and is one of the country’s largest charitable textile collectors. Last year alone, the organization diverted over 80 million pounds of materials from landfills through its recycling and reuse programs.
