For the first time in over 46 years, Vancouver’s iconic Gastown steam clock will change its tune.

From December 5 to December 13, the clock will chime Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” instead of its traditional Westminster Chimes, contributing to the excitement surrounding the artist’s performances.
An official event marking the change will occur at noon on Thursday, December 5, inviting fans and visitors to witness the historic moment. The clock will play the new melody every 15 minutes, with a longer rendition at the top of each hour. During this period, its operating hours will extend until 11 p.m.
“What began as an April Fools’ Day joke with Destination Vancouver has become a reality,” said Walley Wargolet, Executive Director of the Gastown Business Improvement Society (GBIS).
The late Ray Saunders, the creator of the steam clock who passed away on November 23, approved the unique project before his death. “Ray was charmed by the challenge and fully supported the idea,” Wargolet explained. “He loved interacting with visitors at the clock, sharing stories, and answering questions. This tribute is a way to honour his legacy and thank him for his work.”
The GBIS invites locals and visitors to experience this special transformation, which adds a distinctive flair to the festivities in Gastown.
Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver also marks Taylor Swift’s upcoming visit by turning its iconic 450-foot-long suspension bridge into a giant friendship bracelet from December 5 to 9.
