Starbucks Loyalty Program Gets a Revamp: How the New Tiers Change Free Coffee Rewards

Starbucks is changing how loyalty works, and if you’re a regular customer, the biggest takeaway is simple: the more you engage, the more you get back.

The coffee chain has reworked its Starbucks Rewards program to make benefits kick in faster, feel more personal, and actually reward long-term loyalty in visible ways.

The redesigned program now runs on three tiers, Green, Gold and Reserve, based on how many Stars you earn through purchases. As you move up, your earning power increases, perks improve, and Star expiration becomes far less of a worry.

According to Tressie Lieberman, Starbucks’ global chief brand officer, the changes are rooted in member feedback and are meant to make customers feel genuinely appreciated, not just tracked.

At its core, the system still works the same: you earn Stars when you spend, and you redeem those Stars for food, drinks, or merchandise. What’s new is how quickly value adds up, and how long it lasts.

What each membership level gives you

  • Personalized offers and early access to select items
  • Free Mod Mondays: one complimentary drink modification per month
  • Stars expire after six months, but monthly activity keeps them alive
  • Earn 1 Star per dollar, plus bonus Stars for digital card reloads

Gold level (500 Stars in 12 months)

  • All Green benefits, plus:
  • Stars never expire
  • Seven days to redeem your birthday reward
  • Earn 1.5 Stars per dollar
  • At least four extra Double Star Days each year

Reserve level (2,500 Stars in 12 months)

  • All Green and Gold benefits, plus:
  • Stars never expire
  • 30 days to use your birthday reward
  • Earn 1.7 Stars per dollar
  • At least six extra Double Star Days annually
  • Access to premium experiences, including all-expenses-paid coffee culture trips to places like Tokyo, Milan, or Costa Rica

You can move up a tier anytime as Stars accumulate, and your status lasts for 12 months. Progress is tracked in the Starbucks app or online account.

Redeem Stars for Rewards

  • 25 Stars: Free drink customization (up to $1 value)
  • New – 60 Stars: $2 off any qualifying purchase
  • 100 Stars: Brewed coffee or tea, bakery item, or snack (up to $6)
  • 200 Stars: Handcrafted drinks or hot breakfast items (up to $10)

When the revamped program launches on March 10, your existing Stars stay put, and your new level will appear automatically in the app.
