The federal government announced up to $8.75 million in funding on October 30, 2026, for the Ballantrae Multi Sport Complex, a proposed 240,000-square-foot facility expected to become one of Canada’s largest community-oriented recreation centres.

The proposed indoor dome will offer:

  • A FIFA-regulation soccer field that can be divided into smaller turf fields.
  • Basketball and volleyball courts.
  • Pickleball and padel courts.
  • A 400-metre indoor walking and running track.
  • Baseball and cricket batting cages.
  • Fitness and training areas.
  • Classrooms offering coding and artificial intelligence learning.
  • Sports medicine and wellness services.
  • Multipurpose community rooms, spectator areas and food services.

The facility is being designed to accommodate recreational users and competitive athletes, including provincial, national and international tournaments.

The federal government says the complex will be fully accessible, with programming opportunities for children, seniors, families and people with disabilities.

When Will the Ballantrae Multi Sport Complex Open?

According to the Town of Stouffville’s September 2026 project update, detailed designs are nearly complete, with construction expected to begin in early spring 2027.

The town is aiming to make the facility available to residents for the 2027-28 indoor sports season.

The federal announcement estimates construction will take approximately eight to 10 months, with the dome built almost entirely using Canadian-sourced materials.

The project is being developed through a partnership with Mentana Group, which replaced Ballantrae Sports Group after the earlier agreement was terminated in May 2025.

Mayor Iain Lovatt said the funding brings the community closer to a year-round facility for recreation, training and competition.

The Ballantrae Multi Sport Complex is planned for 5592 Aurora Road in Stouffville, beside Ballantrae Park.

The surrounding park already has tennis courts and open spaces, while the new complex will include accessible parking.

The town has published updated architectural renderings, playfield plans and facility layouts.
