Things to Do in Nordegg

Nordegg, Alberta, situated just off the David Thompson Highway, is located in west-central Alberta. This small hamlet was once a thriving coal-mining town. Now, it is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream town. People who visit Nordegg will be impressed by all the outdoor adventures that await them, whether they are right in town or just a few minutes’ drive outside of Nordegg. Be sure to check out at least a few different places while you are there, including Chungo Creek Outfitters, Miners Cafe, and Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area.

Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area

If camping near a waterfall is something you’ve always wanted to do make sure to check out Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area. The campground has 29 unserviced sites and the entire area not only has a beautiful waterfall but also great fishing, hiking and horseback riding trails, as well as geocaching sites.

Coliseum Mountain Hike

This intermediate leveled hike is ideal for a day hike in the picturesque Nordegg area. Only a roughly five minute drive from Nordegg to the parking lot, this is an out-and-back type trail that should take between four and six hours to complete. Reaching the summit should only take 2-3 hours, and the view is definitely worth the climb! Website

West Fraser Outdoor Discovery Park

West Fraser Outdoor Discovery Park is a fun park in Nordegg. There is an exercise area for adults, a pump track that appeals to kids of all ages, slides, a jungle gym, climbing rocks, plus plenty of space to lay down a blanket and have a picnic while enjoying the scenic views of Nordegg, Alberta.

Brazeau Collieries Mine Site & Nordegg Heritage Museum

The Nordegg Heritage Museum as well as the Brazeau Collieries Mine Site is a great place to check out on a beautiful summer day. When touring the mine site you can choose from two different tours. The first tour is the Auxiliary Tour which takes you around all the workshops, houses, and external workings of the mining operation. It also takes people into the entrance of the mine shaft. The second tour option goes through the briquette plant. You get to explore the entire factory, and the sites are definitely worth all the hills and stairs you will encounter along the way. Each tour only operates once per day, so its best to check out the website to plan appropriately. The museum itself is also worth taking the time to check out. While there be sure to check out the gift shop and Miner’s Cafe!

Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area Campground

Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area Campground is one of the only PRAs to offer campsites with power. There are non serviced sites available as well, with over 100 sites, including pull-through and waterfront sites, you can pick a site that suits your taste! Things to do at Fish Lake include fishing, hiking, playing horseshoes, boating, and swimming.

Goldeye Lake Provincial Recreation Area

Goldeye Lake Provincial Recreation Area is just a hop, skip, and a jump from Nordegg. This year round PRA is available for cross country skiing and ice fishing in the winter as well as camping, hiking, geocaching, boating, kayaking, swimming, and more in the summer. There are 44 campsites as well as a day use area. Website

Via Ferrata in the David Thompson Corridor

Via Ferrata means Iron Way. A dedicated group of climbers from Nordegg area built this ferrata, one of the first on North America and the first in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. This Via Ferrata is over 300 iron rungs fastened to the rock, allowing climbers of all ages–from as young as 10 years old–to experience the thrill of climbing straight up a cliff face. Although not for the faint of heart, it is for those who would love the adventure but don’t have to experience to do traditional rock climbing. The trip takes 3 hours total to complete, and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking and memorable. Website

Another small and simple campground to check out is the one at Dry Haven Provincial Recreation Area. With only 14 campsites available, there is no chance of it being overly crowded. Many use this as an overnight stop when accessing the Banff/Jasper Parkway. Hike, fish, and enjoy the great outdoors at Dry Haven Provincial Recreation Area.
