A new area code, 942, will be introduced to the Toronto region beginning April 26, 2025, to accommodate the increasing demand for telephone numbers. The change will affect the area currently served by the existing 416, 437, and 647 area codes.
The decision to implement the new code follows a directive from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), prompted by projections indicating the exhaustion of available numbers in the current area code complex.
The Canadian Numbering Association (CNA) first reported in 2019 that the supply of numbers in the 416/437/647 area could run out by early 2024. Updated estimates later moved the projected exhaustion date to mid-2025.
The 942 area code will be gradually introduced starting April 26, 2025. New telephone numbers issued after this date may carry the new code, depending on availability. Existing numbers will remain unchanged.
The overlay will not alter local calling areas, dialling procedures, or emergency services access. Calls to 911 and other three-digit services will continue to function as usual.
