WestJet has issued a 72-hour lockout notice after the union representing its flight attendants delivered a strike notice, creating uncertainty for passengers travelling during the upcoming long weekend.

The notices do not immediately affect flights, and a labour disruption is not guaranteed. WestJet and CUPE Local 8125 remain in negotiations, with both sides saying they want to reach an agreement before any work stoppage begins.
Without a deal, strike or lockout action could start as early as Aug. 2 at 12:01 a.m. Mountain Time.
WestJet is now preparing for the possibility of operating a reduced schedule. The airline said it may make advance flight changes or cancellations to give passengers more notice and reduce the chance of guests, employees and aircraft becoming stranded.
“The decision to issue a lockout notice, in response to the actions taken by the union, was not one that was made lightly,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, chief executive officer of the WestJet Group.
Von Hoensbroech said WestJet values the work of its cabin crew and will continue negotiating around the clock. The company is seeking an agreement that provides meaningful improvements for employees while remaining sustainable for the airline.
CUPE Local 8125 said the two parties are still divided on several key issues. Union president Alia Hussain said flight attendants have worked to reach a fair contract and do not want to disrupt passengers.
“There’s still time to avoid a strike,” Hussain said. “We will continue to bargain around the clock until this is resolved.”
The union is also asking the federal government to respect the collective bargaining process and allow WestJet and its flight attendants to negotiate without intervention.
What travellers should do:
Passengers booked between July 30 and Aug. 4 should review their reservations and monitor their email for updates. WestJet is allowing a one-time change or cancellation at no additional cost through its Manage Trips service.
Travellers who booked directly with WestJet will be contacted using the email address attached to their reservation. Those who purchased tickets through a travel agent or online booking company should contact that provider directly.
If flights are delayed or cancelled, affected passengers will be refunded or rebooked when applicable.
