About Glenbow Museum

With over 93,000 square feet of exhibition space in more than 20 galleries, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary is one of Western Canada’s largest museums,showcasing a selection of the Glenbow’s collection of over a million objects. The Glenbow-Alberta Institute was formed in 1966, when oil baron Eric Harvie donated his vast historical collection to the people of Alberta.

Things to do at Glenbow Museum

Glenbow museum houses art works, sculptures and other artifacts originating from many corners of the world, providing insight into the life in Western Canada from the late 19th century to the present day. The exhibits spread over three floors are grouped under ethnology, military, mineralogy. There is a substantial Asian collection too. The museums also holds  art exhibitions from Glenbow’s collections or traveling exhibitions from other leading galleries. The exhibit on the 3rd floor named ‘Niitsitapiisinni: Our way of life’  details stories and traditions of native people. There is a tipi too. Black foot elders supervised the setting up of this exhibit. ‘Maverick’ exhibit chronicles the story of prominent Albertans from various eras.

The Glenbow archives are one of Canada’s largest non-governmental repositories and a major research centre for historians, writers, students, genealogists, and the media. There is a discovery room for children.

Glenbow conducts many events and programs for kids and adults.

Location & Directions Glenbow Museum

Situated between Stephen Avenue and the Olympic Plaza Cultural District, Glenbow Museum is located in the heart of the Calgary downtown core. There is a vehicle drop off/pick up lane on 9 Avenue S.E. between Centre Street and 1 Street S.E. for bus and tour groups. The museum is  located one block south of Calgary’s light rail transit (LRT) line. You can also reach the museum by Calgary Transit. Downtown C-train serves the Glenbow museum and is in the free fare zone. The Glenbow museum is connected to the Plus 15 walkway system. The museum is located in the section that connects such places as the Fairmont Palliser Hotel, the Calgary Marriott Hotel, the Calgary Tower, the Telus Convention Centre, the Hyatt Regency Hotel, and the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts.
