Elk Island National Park offers a serene winter escape with activities like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating. Wildlife viewing is exceptional in this tranquil, snow-covered landscape. Enjoy tobogganing, explore trails, and unwind by a warm fire.

Remember to practice safety, especially on thin ice, for a memorable winter experience.

Night Sky

It’s the best excuse to stay up past your bedtime. Part of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, Elk Island cuts down on light pollution so you have the best view of the stars. And there’s no better time to bundle up and watch for the northern lights dancing across the sky.

Cross Country Skiing

It’s a great way to explore – nothing but the sound of your skis and poles flying across the fresh snow. Hit the hiking trails and discover the beauty the park has to offer in the winter.

Wildlife Viewing

No leaves on the trees mean there’s less to block your view of all the wildlife that calls the park home. Keep an eye out to spot deer, elk, moose, or bison roaming the grounds. Don’t forget the camera!

Bison Traffic Jam

This traffic jam is nothing like you’ll get in the city… Drive carefully through the park, as you may come across a herd of bison blocking the road. Come face-to-face with the huge animals who move at their own pace – what a reason to be running late!

Geocaching

Grab the GPS and follow the clues to find five hidden geocache sites within the park boundaries. Sign your name in the log and grab a selfie to prove your skills at the treasure hunt.

Winter Camping

Who says camping is only a warm-weather activity? The RV and tenting sites stay open year-long, so bundle up and grab the gear for a unique winter experience that will have you experiencing the park in a new way. Winter camping is available from early October to late  April.

Snowshoeing

Discover the park the same way as explorers of long ago! Strap on a pair of snowshoes (available to rent at the Astonin Theatre Interpretive Centre) and make your way out into nature.

You can also join for guided snowshoeing trips.

Red Chairs

You’ve got a seat reserved with Parks Canada! They’ve set up five pairs of iconic red Adirondack chairs in the park. They’re the perfect place to sit and watch the best views of the park.

Skating

When’s the last time you skated around an island? The rink on Astonin Lake leads you around Archer Island, so lace up. Or, grab the gang for shinny hockey in a national park – oh, so Canadian.

Campfires

What better way to trips than with s’mores and hot dogs around a blazing campfire? Picnic shelters stay open year-round, so you can grab a bite before heading out.
