Niche Lounge

The Niche Lounge is the perfect outing for a summer evening: great food and drink at great prices with a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere. Their patio is beautiful, a few steps down from busy Barrington Street so you can relax while being close to wherever else you may want to take your evening. The patio is currently under construction to become even better by the summer of 2020, so mark your calendars to celebrate! Party Cruises

If you like to party and like being out on the water, there are several options on the Harbourfront to do both. There’s the party boat, cruises on the Silva featuring different kinds of alcohol, and the best part is that if any of you are students, there are special rates. It’s a special kind of party night, one that will be very memorable. Just don’t forget to bring a sweater, because even the hottest nights feel a bit cool once you’re out on the boat.

Hanging Out at The Oval

Take advantage of long summer evenings and head to the Emera Oval at the Halifax Commons. In the winter you can skate and snowshoe, but in the summer the ice is replaced by concrete and your rental options open up even further. Roller skates, bikes, plasma cars…you can rent all of these for free with a government ID. Try something new together or engage in friendly competition. Just keep rolling clockwise and enjoy the weather!

Walk on the Waterfront

If you’re not quite sure what to do, the Waterfront is the best place to go. It’s crowded with stores, eateries, souvenir places, the Wave if you like to climb…the biggest decision you’ll have to make is where you want to start. The best part is that you can walk as far as you want, because there’s plenty of places to stop, eat, shop, and then easily find a cab or bus to move on to another destination. Have fun and enjoy your walk beside the Harbour together!

Shop at Dartmouth Crossing

If you want to shop with a group, there must be options for everyone, or there will be grumpiness. Dartmouth Crossing solves this problem with easy walking between nearly every store you can imagine. Make a scavenger hunt type list where you visit a store for everyone, or hit a few stores together and then break off to do your own thing for a while. Make sure you try one of the many great restaurants in the Crossing to finish the day and examine your purchases.

Putting Edge

Sometimes you just want to glow in the dark and play mini golf; that’s when you head to Putting Edge. It’s a great way to play mini gold because it’s dark enough that no one can make fun of your technique, but bright enough that you’ll still get roasted for missing an easy putt. You’ll find groups of all ages there, but it’s easy enough to hang out on your own and have some friendly competition. Or maybe not so friendly, all bets are off when it comes to mini golf.

Rockbottom Brewpub

If you want a solid bar with great food, awesome beer and great music, Rockbottom is the place to go. Tucked away just under Spring Garden Road, this pub features a great range of food and drink options, so it’s perfect for a group with different tastes. They have their own beers available as well as other local options, and they have live music and karaoke on the weekends. They have different specials every night of the week, so all you have to do is pick your favourite and settle into one of their lovely high tables or booths.

Clay Café

Clay Café is a great place to go if you’re feeling arty. The concept is simple: they have unpainted clay figurines, you choose one, choose your paints, and paint the figurine. It’s then baked in the kiln and you pick it up a couple of days later. They have a huge range of figurines so it works for any budget, and you can sit and talk together as you make things pretty and enjoy their coffee and tea on offer.

Le Bistro by Liz

If you want to escape to Paris with your best friends, you can do it right here in Halifax! Le Bistro is a French-style restaurant with Parisian décor and great gourmet dining at affordable prices. Their menu celebrates French cooking with an Atlantic Canadian edge, and their wine list does the same. And of course, you have to stay for one of their incredible desserts, perhaps while you enjoy one of their live music nights.

A Mano’s

Ristorante A Mano’s is one of my favourite restaurants in all of Halifax, and it’s a great one to share with friends. Their Italian menu is easy on the wallet and a delight to the palate, which the wine list compliments perfectly. If you’re planning a special evening out in advance, maybe if someone’s coming back to town for a visit, you should consider booking their Italian Feast option, which lets you have several dishes you can share around the table, so everyone can try a bit of everything. Best of all, it’s right on the Waterfront at Bishop’s Landing, so it’s a great place to finish a Waterfront walk.

Picnic on Citadel Hill

This is best enjoyed during the summer, as you’ll have more time in the sun. Sitting on the side of the hill with a picnic blanket and a basket full of goodies, you can watch downtown Halifax and gaze across the Waterfront. You get more room to goof around, talk as loud as you want, and when the sun goes down you can go down the hill and continue your evening downtown.

Grafton Street Dinner Theatre

If you want to combine dinner and a show, this is the place to go! The Grafton Street Dinner Theatre is a fantastic theatre experience with interactive shows of various themes and genres. They have a great menu including vegetarian and vegan options, and they have drinks for anyone, including non-alcoholic cocktails that are just lovely. Pick a show and pick a night and enjoy food and theatre all at once.

Shakespeare by the Sea

If you’re looking for an outside experience of theatre, you’ve got to check out Shakespeare by the Sea. This non-profit theatre group performs all summer long in Point Pleasant Park, as well as into the fall at their indoor theatre. They perform Shakespeare, of course—usually one tragedy and one comedy—and they also do a family-friendly play. In the fall they also do a show or two, with different options every year. Check them out and enjoy theatre in the park!

The Foggy Goggle

This is a bar you go to if you want fantastic food, fantastic service, and fantastic drinks. It’s pretty fantastic, and that seems like hyperbole but seriously it’s great. They source local ingredients, their prices are reasonable, and they’re at the beginning of Gottingen Street, so you can walk right through the North End after supper. If you’re after something sweet, as great as the desserts are at the Goggle I would suggest walking up the street to either Vandals or Fortune Doughnuts for gourmet doughnuts in so many flavours.

There are a couple of places to go in Halifax for Karaoke, including Rockbottom Pub (see above). But the Fickle Frog is especially well-known for it. There are two beer gardens in Halifax, and they’re both really fun places. The Stillwell Beer Garden on Spring Garden Road has fantastic food and beer options, and sells the best soft serve ice cream in the city all summer long (it’s great in all of its flavours). The Stubborn Goat Beer Garden is on the Waterfront, so you can look at the ocean as you sample a boardwalk menu and a wide list of local beers. Whichever you choose, you’ll have a fantastic outdoor pub experience for a great summer evening.

Yuk Yuk’s

Laughter is the best medicine for a long week, a tough month, or just a happy day you’d like to make even better. Yuk Yuk’s is a comedy club where you can get this exact kind of medicine all week long. You can see the Maritimes’ finest comedians, get a glimpse at future talent on the ‘New Talent Showcase’ nights, or see one of the special shows. They have extensive snacks and drinks menus, and if you have a party of under 20 you can get a dinner/show package.

The Casino isn’t just a place to try your luck at games of chance. They have a restaurant with very decent food and some great specials (they have a prime rib and shrimp buffet on Fridays and Saturdays). They also host concerts, comedy shows, and other performances. Make a plan, enjoy your evening, and who knows? You might get lucky.

Captured Escape Rooms

Sometimes you want to exercise your brains with your friends; you want to solve puzzles. An escape room is a great way to do that, and Captured Escape Rooms is a wonderful place to get acquainted with this activity, or to check out as seasoned veterans. They currently have seven different themed rooms, each with well set-up clues and helpful hints provided for a donation to a local charity. Put on your thinking caps, gather a group with a diverse set of skills (hint: someone should be halfway decent at math), and escape!

Scotiabank Centre

You can always spend a game night at home or at a sports bar, but if your crew really loves sports, why not see a game live? The Scotiabank Centre hosts the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL hockey), the Halifax Hurricanes (basketball), and the Halifax Thunderbirds (lacrosse). The tickets are reasonable, there’s lots of food options within the centre (as well as apparently decent cheap beer), and they always put on a great show. Check out the site for the schedule of upcoming games, and keep an eye out for concerts or shows that are hosted there too; you might find something else of interest.

Freak Lunch Box

This is a magical candy store; it’s magical because Willy Wonka himself (Gene Wilder) came to see it. They have lots of bulk candy as well as retro candies from different parts of the world. They even have Jelly Bellies with each flavour in its own container, so you can get exactly what candy you want. They’re open until 11 most nights, so you can stop in at any time to pick out candy together, grab a milkshake, and recover some of your inner child by standing in a place that’s all about celebrating sweet teeth.

Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre

Watching a movie together in theatres is a great night out, whether it’s a movie you’re all looking forward to, or just a movie you have to see to believe it got made. The Scotiabank Theatre in Bayers Lake is a great option for seeing movies because they also have a great arcade, a restaurant, and lots of options for movies so you have the option to watch things in 3D, or avoid watching things in 3D. When the movie’s over, you can enjoy the arcade together and then explore Bayers Lake together.
