In the face of escalating living costs, Canadians are increasingly seeking assistance through GoFundMe, appealing to the compassion of their fellow citizens to navigate the challenges of record-high inflation and a severe shortage of affordable housing.
Today’s news release by GoFundMee highlights the fact that Canada is facing a significant affordability crisis, deeply affecting its residents’ ability to manage everyday expenses. The popular crowdfunding platform says it has become a crucial tool for Canadians seeking financial support amidst these challenging times.
Between 2020 and 2023, GoFundMe witnessed a staggering increase in campaigns related to cost-of-living issues, highlighting the depth of the financial strain experienced across the country.
During this period, nearly 215,000 GoFundMe campaigns were initiated, raising over $480 million to aid Canadians grappling with the rising costs associated with living expenses. This surge represents a 274% increase in campaigns specifically mentioning “cost-of-living” since the onset of 2020, with a notable 43% rise from 2022 to 2023 alone, and a further 23% uptick in such campaigns within 2023.

GoFundMe says the data reveals a particular emphasis on struggles related to food and housing. Over 55,000 campaigns were launched to assist individuals facing difficulties with food expenses, and an overwhelming 139,447 campaigns were established to help those unable to afford rent. These figures underscore the growing reliance on communal support through platforms like GoFundMe to navigate the financial hardships imposed by record-high inflation and housing shortages.
Per their data, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver emerged as the cities most impacted by cost-of-living challenges, with numerous campaigns originating from these areas.
One poignant example is the campaign created by social worker Leigh Adamson from Ottawa for her friend Claude, who found himself living in his car due to the unmanageable cost-of-living. Claude, a dedicated peer specialist at a local housing agency, received support through GoFundMe, which covered essential needs like shelter, a bed, mattress, and a laptop.
In the wake of an unprecedented increase in funding campaigns, GoFundMe has gone to the extent of creating a webpage where Canadians can learn more, access resources (including government/foodbank options), and provide support for campaigns.
