Telecommunications Alliance says Alberta will be getting a new area code to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers.
The new area code 368 will be introduced gradually across the province starting April 23, 2022.
Alberta now has four area codes – 403, 587, 780 and 825.
Program Manager of the Canadian Numbering Administrator, Kelly T. Walsh said in a statement, “The introduction of a new area code creates millions of additional telephone numbers without affecting the existing numbers. The new area code 368 will be added to the current area codes already in use in Alberta.”
The code 368 will only be assigned to customers once there is no longer a sufficient supply of numbers with the existing area codes..
In 1947, the first area code – 403 – was introduced in Alberta. In 1999, area code 780 was created to serve Northern Alberta (Edmonton), while 403 code was retained for Southern Alberta (Calgary). In response to the increasing demand for telephone numbers due to the popularity of wireless services, the area code 587 was added in 2008 and 825 was introduced in 2016.
