Aurélie Rivard Wins Canada’s First Gold at Tokyo Paralympics

Aurélie Rivard has won Canada’s first gold medal at Tokyo Paralympic Games.

St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec swimmer won the women’s S10 100m freestyle on Saturday in 58.14 seconds – a world record.  Netherland’s Chantalle Zijderveld and Lisa Kruger won silver and bronze respectively.

This was the second time the 25-year-old broke the world record in a single day. Earlier in the day, she swam in a record time of 58.60 seconds in the preliminaries.

This is Rivard’s second medal as she won bronze in the S10 50m freestyle.

Aurélie Rivard now has a career total of four gold, two silver and a bronze.

She won gold medals in 50 m freestyle S10, 100 m freestyle S10, 400 m freestyle S10, silver in 200 m individual medley SM10 at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games. Her very first podium finish was in the 2012 London games where she won silver for S10 400 m freestyle.

Canada now has 8 medals at the games  – one gold, five silver and 2 bronze.
