The City of Calgary is set to host its annual Curbside Treasure Hunt on September 6 and 7, 2025, inviting residents to participate in a citywide event aimed at waste reduction and community engagement.
During the two-day event, Calgarians are encouraged to place reusable items they no longer need on their curbs for others to collect and use, creating a massive, city-spanning garage sale at no cost.
The Treasure Hunt not only diverts items from landfills but also offers a fun, interactive way for residents to declutter their homes and explore different neighbourhoods in search of hidden gems.
Participants are advised to gather usable items, label them as ‘free,’ and place them at the curb on the designated days.
New for 2026, the city now has an online map for the Treasure Hunt. You can add your items to the new map by filling out an online form. This will make it easier for fellow treasure hunters to find your items.
After the event, remove any unclaimed items from the curbside. Residents can consult the city’s waste management resources at calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere to find appropriate recycling, donation, or disposal options for leftover items.

How It Works:
- Gather: identify items in your home that you no longer need but could be valuable to someone else.
- Label: mark these items with a “Free” label.
- Place: set the items out at the curb on September 12 and 13, and add your location to the online map.
- Discover: residents and treasure hunters can explore different neighbourhoods and pick up items they find interesting or useful. (Map)

This is a great idea, but we tried last year and it can not be considered an environment cleaning up thing and even though garbage becomes someone’s treasure and keeps things out of the landfill, we found that with no guide to suggest where participation in the Declutter and Discover! Curbside Treasure Hunt! may be more popular, it is a hit and miss just driving around and “hoping” to find what may be treasures for us. Costly too. Any ideas on who may know areas in Calgary, like Garage Sale listings so we can focus on driving around those areas. Maybe a Community Association that has done more effective promotion on this event?
