A&W Canada has launched an exchangeable cup program, the ‘A&W One Cup,’ as part of its efforts to address cup waste.
Per the news release, unlike traditional reusable cup programs, this initiative allows customers to purchase a reusable cup for $3 when ordering a beverage and exchange it for a cleaned and sanitized cup on their next visit while receiving a 20-cent discount. The program aims to combat the issue of over a billion single-use cups ending up in Canadian landfills annually.
Leveraging their dishwashers, the company aims to make it convenient for customers to reduce cup waste through the One Cup program. When customers bring in their used One Cup, A&W restaurants handle the cleaning process. This eliminates the need for customers to wash reusable cups themselves, making it a hassle-free option.
Since its pilot launch in select Canadian markets, A&W says they have prevented more than 55,000 cups from ending up in landfills. They anticipate this number will grow into the millions during the first year of the program’s national rollout.
