When do you need B.C. Vaccine Card:

The requirement to use the BC Vaccine Card as proof of vaccination will be phased in to allow people time to transition to their new cards.

  • From September 13, 2021 to September 26, 2021, people will also be able to use the vaccination records they got at B.C. vaccine clinics or pharmacies as valid proof of
    vaccination.
  • Starting September 27, 2021, only the BC Vaccine Card, printed or digital, will be accepted for people vaccinated in B.C.

The province says the measures will be time-limited through to Jan. 31, 2022, subject to possible extension.

What do you need to get proof of COVID-19 Vaccine:

British Columbians can get proof of vaccination through a secure website on B.C. Health Gateway. To access proof of vaccination an individual will need:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • personal health number (PHN), which is found on the back of your B.C. driver’s licence, BC Services Card or CareCard.
  • Date of vaccination (Dose 1 or Dose 2)

If the online records are incorrect, call 1-833-838-2323 to rectify this.

How to get Vaccine Card online:

Login with a B.C. Services card app online or register through this website (https://www.healthgateway.gov.bc.ca/vaccinecard) with the above details.

You will be taken to this screen:

Once you enter the details, you can get the digital pdf card in your name with a QR code. Save this on your phone and show it at designated businesses and events along with a valid government ID.

Government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, BC Services Card, or a passport is required for people 19 years and older. Youth aged 12 to 18 are not required to show valid government photo ID with the proof of vaccination.

If you do cannot access the proof online:

The province says individuals who can’t access the electronic BC Vaccine Card can ask a friend, family member or support person to print their BC Vaccine Card for them, visit a Service BC office, or call 1 833 838-2323 to receive a copy in the mail.

Who is required to show proof of vaccination:

Proof of vaccination applies to all people 12+ in the settings where required as listed above and in all geographic regions of B.C including visitors starting September 13th.

The province says businesses should not request to see an employee’s proof of vaccination as part of the BC Vaccine Card program unless the employee is attending as a customer.

Businesses or institutions can decide on their own vaccination policies for their employees but would be responsible for doing their own due diligence.

Vaccine proof for people from out of province:

Visitors are required to show proof of vaccination whether they are from other provinces of Canada or international provinces.

Out-of-province visitors can use provincially/territorially officially recognized vaccine records with a valid government photo identification.

International visitors must show proof of vaccination they used to enter Canada (ArriveCan) with a valid passport.

How will businesses verify the information:

Businesses can choose to verify vaccine results either visually or by scanning the QR code using a new app presented on paper or on a person’s phone.

For those businesses choosing to scan the QR code to determine a person’s proof of vaccination, a reader app (BC Vaccine Card verifier app) will be available to download by September 13, 2021 from the Google and Apple app stores.

Businesses will have to check a customer’s details every time they visit including verifying proof of vaccine and validating name with government-issued photo identification if 19+. The province says it is working out the best practices for checking details of regular customers with various businesses.

The province says no personal information will be retained in the app.

How will the COVID-19 vaccine proof be enforced:

At the discretion of enforcement officers, businesses and organizations that do not comply with the PHO order may be issued a violation ticket that varies from $230 or $575 for individuals and $2300 for business owners, operators and event organizers.

A detailed FAQ for businesses is given here.
