Bed bugs, the insects that live on the blood of humans and animals, are efficient hitch hikers, and so it should come as no surprise when most popular travel centres and big cities of Canada top the list when it comes to bed bug infestations.
Orkin Canada, country’s largest pest control provider, has released its third annual list of top bed bug cities based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments carried out by the company between the period of January 1 – December 31, 2019.
Toronto tops the list with Winnipeg and Vancouver claiming second and third positions respectively. Scarborough takes the sixth spot, but considering that Scarborough is part of Toronto and not a separate city, the bug problem in Toronto must be really bad.
This year’s top ten bed bug cities are:
- St. John’s
If you do not want to bring home Cimex lectularius (bed bug) as your travel companion, then
- Examin bags and clothing after your trip. Bed bugs can be identified by noticing tiny dark coloured stains, cast skins or live bugs.
- Avoid unpacking on the hotel beds and do not put the luggage on your bed or furniture to unpack when you come home.
- Wash and dry potentially infested bed linens or clothing on the highest heat setting.
