Calgary Parents are Organizing a Drive-Thru Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2020

A group of Calgary parents with the help of event industry professionals, businesses and venues are rallying to provide a graduation celebration for the Class of 2020 through a drive-through event.

Since the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has prohibited graduation ceremonies of any kind through to the Fall, the organisers say their goal is to “safely provide a unique opportunity for our 2020 graduates to feel celebrated as they close this chapter of their young lives, providing them inspiration and launching them into adulthood. This is the Class of 2020, not 2021, and definitely not the Class of COVID-19.”

Though this is not a board-approved event, students of CBE, Charter high school in Calgary, and Catholic high school can participate according to the social media post. Six private schools in Calgary have signed up to participate in the event.

As for university students, organisers say, “If you are a student at a college or university in Calgary, we have to date focused our efforts on ensuring high school graduates can “walk the stage” at our Drive Thru Grad. We will be reaching out to the various universities and colleges in the next week to assess their interest in participating, and we will provide you with more details at that time.”

The organisers are aiming to hold the first event on June 15th, 2020 at the Stampede grounds.

If you are about to graduate and want to “walk the stage” this Spring, sign up online.
