Calgary’s Stephen Avenue Will Be Car Free from 11 A.M. This Summer

Mayor Naheed Nenshi announced that Stephen Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic so that restaurants can expand patios to the edge of the sidewalk while allowing pedestrians safely use the road.

Stephen Avenue will only allow pedestrians and cyclists from May 29th, 11:00 a.m. Vehicular traffic will be allowed in the mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Nenshi said, “The basic thing is to support those businesses because restaurants are operating at lower capacity, they need those patios. We have to extend the patios in order for them, to have more patrons available for them. Patios will go right to the edge of the sidewalk. What is now the driving lane will become a pedestrian/cyclist Lane.”

“This is not a street festival. This is not a summer party on Stephen Avenue or a place to come and hang out on the street. What this is about is supporting those local businesses. Come in and have dinner or lunch.”
