Canada’s Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles Revealed as Auto Theft Tops $1 Billion

Auto theft continues to place a significant burden on Canadians, with insurance claims surpassing $1 billion in 2024 despite a national drop in incidents.

Équité Association released its annual list of Canada’s most stolen vehicles in 2024, highlighting changes in criminal strategies and vehicle targets.

Topping the list is the 2021 Toyota RAV4, with 2,080 reported thefts, reflecting its popularity among organized crime groups for its high resale potential and global demand. It replaced previous frontrunners and became a new focus for theft operations. SUVs with keyless entry systems, particularly newer models, remain frequent targets.

Other commonly stolen vehicles include the 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 Series (2,018 thefts), 2020 Honda CR-V (1,911), and 2023 Ford F150 (1,833).

Pickup trucks and SUVs dominate the list, with models like the Ford F150 Series (2023), Jeep Wrangler (2023), and Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series (2006) indicating that both new and older trucks are popular theft targets. Notably, the Toyota Tundra (2024) had the highest theft rate percentage despite having fewer insured vehicles.

Passenger vehicles such as the Honda Civic (2020) also feature prominently, underscoring that theft isn’t limited to large vehicles.

High-value thefts are on the rise, with a 47.5% increase in vehicles valued over $200,000. Many stolen vehicles are re-identified or dismantled for parts in illicit operations.

Équité Association is calling for Transport Canada and U.S. regulators to mandate the proposed ULC 338 standard, aimed at improving vehicle security systems and deterring theft.
