Gas prices are set to rise on April 1st across New Brunswick due to an increase in carbon tax.
The provincial government is planning to increase gas prices by $10 per tonne on carbon-emitting products under the Gasoline and Motive Fuel Tax Act.
According to the news release, to meet the federal requirements New Brunswick is increasing carbon tax to $50 per tonne from $40 per tonne, effective April 1.
This increase will raise the carbon tax on gas by:
- 2.21 cents per litre (from 8.84 cents per litre to 11.05 cents per litre) for gasoline
- 2.68 cents per litre (from 10.73 cents per litre to 13.41 cents per litre) for diesel
Finance and Treasury Board Minister, Ernie Steeves said in a statement, “This will generate an additional $40 million in revenue, which will be recycled back into the New Brunswick economy.”
The province says a total of $47 million will be transferred into the Climate Change Fund for 2022-23.
