On April 8th, a unique opportunity awaits at the Toronto Zoo with the arrival of a solar eclipse.
This celestial event, notable for the near-total obscuration of the sun, presents a rare chance for visitors to engage directly in scientific observation. The Toronto Zoo’s Welfare Science team is extending an invitation to the public to partake as Junior Citizen Scientists, focusing on documenting the behaviours of zoo animals during the eclipse—a phenomenon with minimal existing research.
“The science team will be asking guests to collect data the day before and after the eclipse as well, which will be then be used as comparable data,” states Toronto Zoo.
“The data collected from these two regular days will help to establish that the changes that the guests observe the day of the eclipse are more likely due to the eclipse than due to other factors.”
The event promises not only an educational experience but also ensures visitor safety by offering free Solar Eclipse glasses on a first-come, first-served basis.
This initiative is scheduled during a PA day, making it an ideal family outing. Zoo doors will open from 9:30am to 4:30pm, allowing ample time for participants to choose their preferred animal habitats for observation
This endeavour by the Toronto Zoo aims to deepen our understanding of animal behaviour in response to rare natural events, enriching the collective knowledge base of the scientific community and the public.
Solar Eclipse at the Toronto Zoo
What: Help Toronto Zoo Welfare Science team document what the animals do during a solar eclipse! The sun will be covered, and during this dark period, Toronto Zoo is interested in the activity levels of our animals and any changes in their behaviours and asking help recording the animals during this unique event!
When: Monday, April 8, 2024 | Solar Eclipse: Near-total solar eclipse between 2:04 p.m. and 4:31 p.m., with the peak happening at 3:19 p.m.
Zoo hours are 9:30am to 4:30pm.
