City of Winnipeg to Lay Off 674 Workers Temporarily

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the closure of City-owned and operated facilities including recreation centres, arenas, libraries, pools. All programming at these Centres had also been suspended.

The City of Winnipeg today announced that it will temporarily lay off 674 non-permanent workers at these facilities, effective Saturday, April 25.

Mike Ruta, Interim Chief Administrative Officer said in the release that, “Covid-19 is having a tremendous impact in our community and our economy, and the closure of City facilities has resulted in a significant reduction in our services. While we want to support our employees, we also need to ensure we are being responsible with taxpayer’s money. We cannot continue to pay employees’ salaries while facilities remain closed and community programs are not available.”

He went on to state that, “As soon as it is safe to open our facilities again and resume programming, we look forward to welcoming our employees back to work. In the meantime, our staff in Human Resource Services will work with employees impacted by this temporary lay-off to help them access any federal programs that may be available.”
