Events Description
Beethoven, along with Joseph Haydn, was one of the great exponents of the string quartet genre. Op. 18, No. 1 was the first of his 17 quartets to be published, in 1801. The beautiful Adagio was inspired by the crypt scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This will be the Astralis Quartet’s first encounter with Beethoven.
John Charles Reid – String Quartet No. 1 – Wisdom To Know The Difference:
The popular artistic director of Jazz Nebula is one of the founders of the Astralis Quartet, although his instruments of choice are the entire saxophone family! This marks the third performance of his cool and entertaining diversion.
Béla Bartók – 14 Bagatelles, Op. 6, arranged by William Jordan:
These Bagatelles began life as highly original short solo piano pieces, composed in 1908, marking a major turning point in Bartók’s style. Upon hearing them, the Italian composer Busoni exclaimed, “At last something truly new!” This performance, 118 years later, marks the world premiere of William Jordan’s new version, made even more vivid and colourful in the arrangement for string quartet.
