Events Description

Light pollution is easy to explain; it is the result of using too much Artificial Light At Night (ALAN). Understanding all the far-reaching negative impacts of light pollution, however, is much more difficult. Researchers have been looking into this for many decades. Biologists are finding that light pollution is putting stresses on large ecological systems, globally, at an ever-increasing rate. A recent study reported that the sky got brighter by ~8% per year over the past 10 years, based on how many fewer stars are visible to people. This is leading to a human loss of cultural connection and wonderment of the universe. How ALAN is affecting human physical and mental health is also being studied.

Join Dark-Sky expert Dr. John Barentine for an educational exploration of light pollution. Dr. Barentine is an author and astrophysicist from Arizona with a passion for science education. He served as the Director of Public Policy for the International Dark-Sky Association and is a member of many US and International Dark-Sky organizations.

This FREE and family-friendly public event is in association with ALAN2023, the 8th International Conference on light pollution, hosted by the University of Calgary and the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Note – Free telescope sky viewing will be provided after this event, weather permitting. Telescope access will be easiest if people park on the University campus in the Arts Parkade. Flat-rate parking fees apply on the UC campus.
