An artist talk and panel discussion about monuments and complex histories

June 10, 1 – 4:30 pm at Fort Calgary

This National Indigenous History Month, spend an afternoon at Fort Calgary learning about the history of the site, celebrating the official opening of Innai’tsiyiyaawa, an exhibit by Sikapinakii Low Horn, and discussing the evolution of public art at the confluence with a panel of experts.

This day of learning, reflection and discussion includes light refreshments and museum admission. Tickets are free, but space is limited — register now!

Event schedule
1 pm – Indigitrails Walking Tour
The day kicks off with a walking tour of the land — download the Indigitrails app to your phone and use augmented reality to follow along with your tour guide Jared Tailfeathers.

1:40 pm – Opening Prayer by Clarence Wolfleg
Gather around the artwork of Sikapinakii Low Horn, where Clarence Wolfleg will give a blessing to officially open the public art exhibition that surrounds and responds to the statue of Colonel Macleod.

2 pm – Artist Talk by Sikapinakii Low Horn
Join Sikapinakii Low Horn in the Burnswest Theatre for an artist talk on their exhibit Innai’tsiyiyaawa (Blackfoot for “They Made Treaty”). Comprised of three colourful panels around the statue of Colonel Macleod, Low Horn’s exhibit puts Crowfoot and the Blackfoot people at the centre of narratives about the lands at Fort Calgary, the signing of Treaty 7 and the stories we continue to make today.

2:30 pm – Refreshments and Museum Break
Enjoy light refreshments and tour the museum, which reopened on May 10 after roof issues and interior damages resulted in a four-month closure to make repairs. The museum has two new exhibits, including Culture & Kin: Reclaiming the Chinese Narrative through Contemporary Art.

3 pm – Panel Discussion: Monuments and Complex Histories
The confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers has long been a place of significance. Hear from a panel of experts about the evolution of public art on this land — the monuments erected here throughout time and the stories they have preserved.
