Events Description
presented by The Calgary Folk Club
Pharis & Jason’s Romero’s 2022 album Tell ‘Em You Were Gold on Smithsonian Folkways was recorded in an old barn they converted into a studio in rustic Horsefly, BC, where Pharis is a fifth-generation resident. The inspiration for this project was the sounds of Jason’s diverse range of handmade banjos. Once again the sublime chemistry this multiple JUNO Award-winning duo consistently creates with their old-timey music is evident in every note they play and sing. From hanging ballads to meditative solo banjo instrumentals, the trademark musical integrity, seductive delicacy and authenticity of their latest release all add up to another artistic and critical triumph. Simply put, this is music for anyone who wants to hear the real deal.
First Up: Jon Brooks (ON)
“I write songs to calm those who’ve looked into, and seen, what is in their hearts. I also write songs to terrify those who have not.” This manifesto statement captures the fierce, uncompromising approach to life and music of Toronto-based troubadour Jon Brooks. Songs like Gun Dealer cut straight to the heart of today’s most urgent social issues, delivered with defiance, empathy and attitude by Canada’s premier urban philosopher.
