Events Description
True North Aid will host A Taste of Indigenous Canada at Knottwood Community Centre.
Shop at the Indigenous artisans market, enjoy samples of traditional food and engage in interactive learning exploring Indigenous culture. Experience the rhythm, singing and stories of Chubby Cree, and immerse yourself in a Powwow 101 Workshop led by Sissy Thiessen Kootenayoo of Wase Saba (Black Bear) Experiences.
True North Aid is a national nonprofit that supports northern and remote Indigenous communities with practical humanitarian aid. In addition to funding Indigenous-led community-centered initiatives we also celebrate Indigenous culture through hosting reconciliatory educational opportunities.
One such opportunity is called A Taste of Indigenous Canada (ATOIC). As the name suggests a local Indigenous caterer will indeed be present! However ATOIC also refers to ‘a little bit of’ and this event aims to elevate Indigenous voices by providing space for the sharing of culture and teachings. Often there is drumming dancing Indigenous vendors and traditional foods.
Our main program, POWWOW 101, will be facilitated by Sissy Thiessen Kootenayoo of Wase Saba (Black Bear) Experiences and Chubby Cree will perform beforehand.
