Events Description

What happens when you send a message you’d never say out loud — and a choir sings it back to you?

Edmonton‑born experimental composer Noël Fanaeian (hundredmillionthousand) returns to his hometown stage with his most ambitious project to date: a one‑night performance where the audience becomes part of the score. Joining forces with Pro Coro Canada and conductor Michael Zaugg, Fanaeian unveils the world première of a new work for chamber choir and live electronics. The piece has no announced title; it will be revealed only when audiences arrive at the door.

At the heart of the performance is a real‑time conversation between composer, ensemble, and audience. Throughout the evening, attendees are invited to send anonymous text messages directly to the choir. These messages are captured live, sung by the ensemble, transformed into ambient electronics, and woven into projected visuals — creating a composition no one in the room, including the musicians, will ever hear again.

The night opens with an improvisation by Allison Balcetis (saxophone) and Afarin Nazarijou (qanun), blending contemporary experimental sound with the ancient resonance of the Middle Eastern zither.

A reception featuring saffron ice cream and spring rolls follows the performance as an ode to Fanaeian’s Persian-Filipino heritage.
