ABOUT WORLD REFUGEE DAY: June 20 marks World Refugee Day, the international day to honour people who have been forced to flee. Together, we can champion their right to seek safety, build support for their economic and social inclusion, and advocate for solutions to their plight. – United Nations Refugee Agency
ABOUT NEW WAVE DOCUMENTARY: Witness the lasting impact of war and displacement on the Vietnamese diaspora and its transformation through joy, music, and reconciliation. Mile-high hair. Synthesized music. Underground parties. Elizabeth Ai was on a mission to excavate an untold story of rebellious punks in the chaotic world of 80s Vietnamese new wave until she rediscovered a hidden past. New Wave Documentary begins as an exploration of the rebellion and freedom within this subculture that evolves into a profound narrative of identity, loss, and healing. In Orange County, California, the synth beats and punk/goth aesthetics provided a sanctuary for a generation of youth grappling with the weight of their parents’ unspoken traumas.
