The 99th Hamilton Christmas Bird Count will be held on December 26, 2019.
It is a tradition going back to a pair of adventurous birders in 1921 and has grown into an annual outing with over a hundred participants scouring Hamilton for every bird that can be found and identified.
The annual Hamilton Christmas Bird Count began on 23 December 1921. Two observers birded for eight hours and recorded eight species! How things have changed. Now we have close to 100 observers on this Boxing Day event, sometimes recording as many as 100 species. The 2019 Count will be the 99th consecutive Hamilton CBC. Count compiler Rob Porter wrote a detailed account of the history of this venerable Count in “The Hamilton Naturalists’ Club – 1919-2019 – A Centennial Celebration in Stories and Pictures”.
