Events Description
Nepean Choir and Chorale Castenchel Choir, with members of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and Nepean High School choirs, are very excited to present our spring 2026 concert, Better is Peace / Mieux vaut la paix.
This massed choir event will feature three works. Omaa Biindig, translating to ‘here, inside’ by Indigenous composer Andrew Balfour, melds Anishinaabemowin lyrics with harmonies influenced by the traditional choral canon. The Armed Man: a Mass for Peace, by Karl Jenkins, was commissioned by The Royal Armouries in 1999 and was recently recognized by Classic FM as Britain’s favourite piece of classical music. Drawing from varied music, poetry and cultures, it explores the nature of war over the past 1000 years. The Listeners: an Oratorio, by Caroline Shaw, has as its basis the golden record, the compendium of human art, culture and information that was launched into space in 1977 as part of NASA’s Voyager program.
Choral concerts and their repertoires are generally planned at least a year in advance. Director Lee Carter seems to have some prescient ability, given how timely this program now seems. Better is Peace focuses on themes of war, peace and the nature of humanity, all wrapped in compelling choral music. We hope you will join us for this very special evening.
