Director Olivier Arteau sets the stage ablaze with the theatrical premiere of Kev Lambert’s inflammatory novel, an incendiary working-class tragedy that shatters the ideological fortresses of left and right, pokes holes into the watertight dam some still might see in heterosexuality and rips apart whatever is left of our bucolic fantasies of small-town life.
A sawmill on the shores of Lac Saint‑Jean is beset by a vicious strike pitting mill and forestry workers against management. Into this heated environment comes Querelle, an enigmatic, charismatic Adonis who seduces a litany of young men, stirring the embers of the conflict with his contagious eroticism. On stage, a dozen actors whisper rumours of his brazen escapades and of a collective uprising with a tragic outcome that looms inevitable. The show delicately plays hide and seek alongside a firestorm of thrilling aural eruptions that will intoxicate your senses. This work is the result of a major partnership between local theatre groups.
Hot-button issues, including worker, Indigenous and queer struggles, blow in on the winds of this authentic, subversive show. But in the end, the fire may not have been lit by one man, nor by an angry mob. Capitalism has always been the one holding the lighter.
