As the seasons shift, discover how to capture the autumnal colours guided by local photographer Aarthi Arunkumar. Whether you’re shooting on a smartphone or camera, this hands-on workshop helps you refine your eye for composition and natural light.
This workshop is weather dependent, and will proceed in the following outdoor OR indoor format.
Outdoor Workshop (weather permitting):
The workshop will focus on fall and low-light photography. Using a smartphone or camera, participants will photograph the colours, textures and changing light of the autumn landscape while developing practical skills in composition, colour and close-up photography.
As the light changes, participants will experiment with slower shutter speeds to capture movement and create light trails, including using moving lights such as passing vehicles.
Indoor Workshop (in case of poor weather):
If the weather means the workshop needs to move indoors, Aarthi has developed a full indoor version. Participants will use seasonal elements such as leaves, pine cones and pumpkins to explore colour, texture, composition and close-up photography.
The session will also cover portrait photography, techniques for photographing outdoor subjects through windows while reducing reflections, and experimenting with slower shutter speeds. Participants will use small moving light sources to create light painting and light trails.
Please note: Participants are required to bring their own equipment which includes a smartphone or camera, tripods are recommended.
Smartphone users will need to download Lightroom Mobile before the workshop, as this will be used to adjust shutter speed.
About the Artist: Aarthi Arunkumar is an Indian Canadian nature photographer with a keen eye for the tiny details and hidden moments in nature. She explores Toronto’s green spaces, using her camera to tell stories about the natural world—how it thrives, adapts, and sometimes struggles. One of her mantras is that photography is a tool for me to be more mindful and be present in the moment. Alongside photography, she is passionate about teaching and has worked in community centers and a private high school. Through both her images and her teaching, Aarthi hopes to inspire conservation and appreciation for the wild spaces around us.
