Death on the Hills

We summon you on Sunday, November 1st at 7 p.m. to the Great Hall, where a cortège of excommunicated choristers gathers to ask a question the living cannot answer: what happens when we die? Witches, friars, hermits, and heathens convene on hallowed grounds, reckoning with the fear and fascination of what lies beyond the veil. As our pilgrims explore immortal works from Verdi’s otherworldly telling of Macbeth to Elgar’s eerie choral apologue Death on the Hills, fear, peace, judgment, and relief are unearthed as Death and his shadowy train ride across the hill. This atmospheric concert of vocal music will take place at the very height of “spooky season“ and is an ideal way to cap off your Halloween weekend. Get a potent potable potion at The Great Hall’s fully licenced bar to enjoy during the performance.

The ensemble consists of Nicholas Borg, Victoria Borg, Ryan Downey, Gwenna Fairchild-Taylor, Claire Harris, Leanne Kaufman, John Kirby, Megan Quick, and Daevyd Pepper. These singers bring to the stage a long history of performing together in major Toronto church choirs, and as choristers and soloists with the Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Calgary Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera Omaha, as well as choirs and orchestras across Canada. Death on the Hills will also feature pianist Claire Harris, well known to Toronto audiences as a member of Opera Revue.
