Events Description

Championing women writers, the Alumnae’s celebrated three-week festival enters its tenth year with the premieres of three original, full-length plays. With provocative writing and inventive staging, FireWorks is an incubator for new works and up-and- coming artists.

The Great Kelleys
by Natalie Frijia

When Pat Kelley dies, his wife sends him to bed with a hot bowl of soup and a firm belief that he will rise again. The kids are less certain, the neighbours are nosey, and their friends know no boundaries. It’s only a matter of time before someone outside their four walls learns too much about the mad Kelley household in which one is praying, one is plotting, one is killing time, and one is rotting in the upstairs bedroom. This dark, farcical comedy is a story of grief, hope, and family.

Smoke Ville
by Genevieve Adam

In 1792, John Simcoe, first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, sails from Kingston to Niagara when a violent storm forces him to shelter in Wellington, the home of Daniel Reynolds. The storm passes, and Lord Simcoe is carried on to Niagara for the opening of the Upper Canada legislature. But when his wife is taken ill, he is forced to leave her behind with Reynolds. Then the story moves forward a couple of hundred years to the modern day, and a hilarious culture clash ensues when a big-city historian tries to rope a skeptical local librarian and “gatekeeper” into her vision for their small town of Smoke Ville.

The Caligula Exiles
by Sarah Danielle Pitman
Somewhere off an unnamed coast, a gale rises. Gus, a cantankerous lighthouse keeper, and Phoebe, a ghost with a particular fondness for poetry, rush to fortify their home against the tempest’s onslaught. When a bewildered castaway washes up on the shore, Gus must invent a way to escape their rocky confines and return him to dry land. But Phoebe, afraid of being left alone, hatches a plan to keep them both at the lighthouse forever. An epic that is both lyrically funny and tragic, The Caligula Exiles reveals the deeds we are driven to in our longing to find connection.
