Events Description
On Sunday, January 25, at the Paradise Theatre in Toronto, the Toronto Film Society is showing a double feature of two Billy Wilder romantic comedies – two films for one low price!
First up is Sabrina (1954): Audrey Hepburn lights up the screen in this sparkling Cinderella story with a dash of Parisian flair. When the chauffeur’s daughter returns home transformed from shy girl to elegant sophisticate, she turns the heads – and hearts – of both Larrabee brothers (played by Humphrey Bogart and William Holden). Billy Wilder’s writing and direction brings wit, romance, and razor-sharp dialogue to this timeless classic. Sabrina is pure Hollywood magic, wrapped in Givenchy and glowing with charm.
Next up is Midnight (1939): Don’t let the title fool you – Midnight is a champagne-soaked screwball delight from start to finish, also co-written by Billy Wilder! Claudette Colbert shines as a down-on-her-luck showgirl who stumbles into high society thanks to a borrowed gown and a well-timed lie. Add a lovestruck taxi driver, a meddling aristocrat (John Barrymore), and a whirl of mistaken identities, and you’ve got a comedy that’s as sharp as it is stylish. A hidden gem from the golden age of Hollywood, this one deserves the spotlight.
