Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is a five-day celebration that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.
The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists across the world. Originating from the Sanskrit “Deepawali,” meaning “rows of lights,” it symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Hindus honour Lakshmi and commemorate Rama’s return to Ayodhya. Jains celebrate Lord Mahavira’s enlightenment, and Sikhs observe Bandi Chorh Diwas, marking Guru Hargobind Sahib’s release from captivity.
Celebrate Diwali across the Greater Toronto Area with many free festivals this year. Enjoy Bollywood entertainment at Mississauga’s Diwali RazzMatazz, festivities at North York’s Mel Lastman Square, fireworks celebrations at Nathan Phillips Square, Diwali Dhamaka in Brampton, Gerrard India Bazaar’s Diwali Mela, Caledon’s dazzling drone show and Brampton’s annual Diwali Mela with fireworks at Sesquicentennial Park.
