Edmonton Allows Restaurants & Retailers to Expand to Sidewalks, No Fee Application Now Open

The city of Edmonton is allowing Edmonton businesses to set up temporary patios and sidewalk sales on sidewalks and parking lots to help businesses maximize their retail space keeping with Alberta health orders.

The City has relaxed rules for new temporary patios, sidewalk cafes and outdoor retail operations.

The City says businesses can register online to open new temporary patios, sidewalk cafes and outdoor retail space by agreeing to follow the new guidelines.

 

According to the Edmonton.ca website,

  • Temporary patios shall only be permitted for Bars and Neighbourhood Pubs; Breweries, Wineries and Distilleries; Restaurants; and Specialty Food Services Uses which are previously approved under an existing valid Development Permit.
  • Temporary outdoor retail space shall only be permitted for Convenience Retail Stores; General Retail Stores; Market; Pawn Stores; and Secondhand Stores Uses with a valid Development Permit.

The City says the businesses interested in opening temporary outdoor options can apply online. As per the city, once the online form is completed, businesses will be able to open the new and expanded patios, sidewalk cafes and outdoor retail space immediately. Businesses will not be required to wait for approval but must follow the City’s guidelines at all times.
