Edmonton Set to Open First-of-Its-Kind Recreation Facility in North America at Coronation Park

Edmonton is adding a major new recreation hub to its map.

Starting Tuesday, January 27 at 5:30 a.m., residents can begin using the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, a facility the City describes as the first of its kind in North America.

Located at 11160 135 Street NW, the centre combines swimming, running, and cycling under one roof. With a 50-metre pool, a 333-metre indoor running track, and an indoor cycling track, it becomes the first indoor triathlon training centre in North America. The site also includes indoor courts, a bouldering wall, an urban-style court, a full fitness centre, functional training areas, two studios, an indoor playground, and additional amenities.

At the heart of the project is the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre. Originally opened in 1970 as Coronation Pool, it closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Rehabilitation work began in fall 2021 to meet current building codes, Alberta Health Pool Standards, and City accessibility and sustainability policies. Construction wrapped up in late 2025, allowing the aquatic centre to reopen within the expanded facility.

“This is not just a facility — it is a destination and a community connector,” said Mayor Andrew Knack, pointing to its role in community wellbeing and economic development.

A public grand opening celebration is scheduled for Friday, January 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with speeches from 11 a.m. to noon. Mayor Knack, Ward Councillor Erin Rutherford, and other officials will attend. A limited number of free admissions are available starting January 26 at 9 a.m. through movelearnplay.ca.

Programming includes aquatics, fitness, arts, children’s camps, childminding, and personal training. Food and beverage service is provided by Second Cup. Track cycling programs are offered through the Alberta Velodrome Association and require separate access.

With this opening, the City of Edmonton now operates 20 recreation and leisure centres citywide.

  • Late, overbudget, and poor quality. Another fine joint venture between the City of Edmonton and Chandos. When are we going to stop the swindling?
