Enbridge Gas customers will see their gas bill increase in the new year. Enbridge Gas Distribution distributes natural gas to over two million customers in Ontario.
Typical residential customers who use natural gas for home and water heating and buy their gas supply from Enbridge will see a total bill increase of about 6.2 per cent, or $54.16 a year. Calculations are based on the assumption that typical residential customers, who buy their gas supply and transportation from Enbridge, use about 2,400 cubic metres of natural gas a year for home and water heating. As a result, their total bill will be about $926 a year.
The increase is primarily due to higher natural gas prices in North America. Though prices are increasing, natural gas remains the most economical choice for home and water heating in Ontario. According to Jamie LeBlanc, Director Gas Supply at Enbridge, a typical customer’s total annual bill is $286 less than it was 10 years ago.
The rate increase is following the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) approval of Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc’s application for the new rates. Enbridge submits rate adjustment applications every three months to reflect changes in the market price of natural gas and transportation services.
The new rates are effective January 1, 2019.
Effective January 1, 2019, Enbridge Gas Distribution will amalgamate with Union Gas Limited to form Enbridge Gas Inc. and will continue to provide gas distribution services in the same manner to the Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas Rate Zones.
