Expect traffic disruption this weekend due to oversize load to travel on highways 14 and 21 from Edmonton to the Fort Saskatchewan area starting this weekend and it could disrupt traffic.

The 682-tonne, 63-metre-long piece of petrochemical development equipment, called a de-ethanizer stripper, will be moved from Edmonton to the Industrial Heartland over four days, Jan. 19-22.

The stripper separates ethane from liquid natural gas to be reused elsewhere in the process or for other petrochemical products (e.g. fuel).

At its largest configuration, including all vehicles, the load is 132 metres long by eight metres wide by 10 metres high (includes all vehicles in length and height). The load will use the entire width of a two-lane highway, including the shoulder.

On Jan. 6, an 820-tonne splitter travelled from Edmonton to the same region was 179 metres long, 9.5 metres wide and 13 metres high (587 feet long x 31 feet wide x 42 feet high).

The load will Dacro Industries on Jan 19, 9 p.m. and is scheduled to reach Hwys 14 & 21 at 5 a.m, Jan 20. It will leave at 8:30 a.m on Jan 21 and will reach Lamont at 4 p.m. The final leg of the transportation will start on Jan 22, 8:30 a.m. and will conclude by noon of the same day.

The load will be moving below the posted speed limit and may pull over periodically; drivers travelling behind the load will face delays. In some spots, the load will be travelling against the flow of traffic, escorted by guide vehicles for safety. Lanes will be blocked off accordingly.

Drivers are reminded to watch for accompanying guide vehicles and flag people, which will control traffic and enhance safety.
