What is an arboretum, anyways? Well besides all the natural beauty you can imagine, an arboretum is a special type of botanical garden which is dedicated to the preservation of trees. In the town of Trochu, you can visit a delightful Arboretum and Gardens that showcase native plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.
Maintained by Arboretum and District Society, Trochu Arboretum and Gardens is home to many varieties of native flora and fauna. While exploring all the different trees and flowers, you will also enjoy the sights and sounds of many bird species.
Among the greenery, you will find picturesque pathways for wandering and meandering, as well as benches and gazebos for places to stop and smell the Alberta Wild Roses.

The area also boasts of aquatic plants and animals in the Dr. Hay Memorial Pond where you can catch glimpses of frogs, goldfish, or koi.
Being an “Arboretum,” these gardens are a great visit for a fall colour visit and during the winter season the Arboretum and District Society puts on a Christmas light show – The Forest of Lights.
While in Trochu, stop at the Trochu Museum to learn more about the French settlers of the 1900s up to the demolition of one of the grain elevators and see take a walking tour of the downtown murals! There will be a lot to see during your visit, so you’re encouraged to plan for an entire day worth appreciating nature and all it has to offer.
If you are hungry, you will find the Sweetgrass Cafe, at the centre of the Trochu Arboretum, making it a perfect spot for lunch or brunch.
